Volunteer Board Member Job Description

Job Summary

The Board of Directors oversees the Tool Library’s activities, sets strategic direction, and ensures the organization serves its community effectively. The Board makes key decisions regarding management, financial oversight and governance.

Purpose

This description clarifies board roles and responsibilities. It should be reviewed annually before elections, or sooner if needed. This job description is an additional explanation of responsibilities identified in the bylaws and Washington state law.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Meetings: Attend one monthly board meeting (online, 1–1.5 hours).

  • Time Commitment: Contribute 3–5 hours per month, plus meetings.

  • Select Volunteer Activities Based on Interests and Experience:

    • Support library operations during open hours (schedule shifts online).

    • Join a workgroup or subcommittee (fundraising, outreach, partnerships).

    • Assist with the annual tool sale.

    • Repair tools or pick up donations.

    • Staff outreach booths at community events.

  • Governance:

    • Participate in executive board duties.

    • Help recruit and onboard staff or volunteers.

    • Attend ad hoc meetings (e.g., strategic planning).

    • Review the Washington State Nonprofit Handbook within 3 months of joining.

Qualifications & Skills

  1. Commitment to building community and working collaboratively.

  2. Interest in woodworking, landscaping, home repair, or other “maker” activities.

  3. Commitment to community building and collaboration.

  4. Ability to represent at least one of the following:

    • Tool Library members (DIY, woodworking, metalworking, arts).

    • West Seattle residents or businesses engaged in outreach, education, or support.

    • Local nonprofits and business partners.

  5. Helpful experience: nonprofit management, board service, grant writing, fundraising.

Working Conditions

Board members must be able to join remote video meetings with working audio and video, and should visit the Tool Library regularly.

Compensation

Board members receive complimentary Tool Library membership and free use of the workshop during their term. This is a volunteer position with no monetary compensation.
